The Reader-Response Criticism became popular around the 1960s, when many people began disagreeing with the ideas of the Formalist Theory. “It’s true that interest in read response was sparked by a problem in formality theory, namely the fact that readers commonly disagree as to the aesthetic structures and properties of texts, and that this disagreement doesn’t feel at all inappropriate even though it puts into question the objectivity in which formalism seeks to validate itself” (Pratt 201).

The switch from Formalist Theory to Reader-Response Theory lies in the interpretation and understanding of the reader. Formalist Theory focused more on the content and form of the piece, while Reader-Response focuses more on the interpretation of the text by the reader. Idealistically, it’s objectivity versus subjectivity. For educators and scholars, teaching Reader-Response was easier than you’d actually think.

Students were already practicing this theory without even knowing it, with the exception of formally writing it down on paper. It was obvious to educators that students were fully engaged in criticizing books, but were taught to match the Formalist theories, meaning that their personal interpretation wasn’t of importance.
